about

"Brooch is the project of two talented melodicists: Mikkel Holm (vocalist and guitarist of Aarhus’ Yung) and Ben Stidworthy (bassist from the band Ought). Brooch, their second release and first for Holm’s own Shordwood Records, delivers six new crystalline jams.

Wafts of psychedelic pop amplify their unhurried yet angular guitar rock this time around. As with their debut 7”, the pair craft dense and deft riffs that eschew stop-start time-signature freakouts in favor of something closer to the chest. It’s an honest offering, conjuring the sincerity of grunge while keeping the baroque riffage of artful punks. Tight and knotty guitar work is the backbone of what these guys do, for sure, though they are not afraid to leave ample room for a voice.

'Anyone,' for example, begins as a metronomic and breathy confessional from Stidworthy and builds to a brickwall slam with the pure pang of morning-after tinnitus and the first cigarette after a week away from the bale. You’re blinded by the hit before realizing that you’re still grooving, and the canned heat of dead-slow disco is mood in and of itself. The EP does this again and again, oscillating between the feelings of intimate conversation and nearly breaking a snare drum.

Mikkel Holm’s first vocal contribution to the record, 'Marvellous,' is a youthful paean that delivers a kind of simpatico catharsis for the mid-tempo tracks before it (and features some of his finest vocal melodies, here or in Yung). 'I’m not weary' Mikkel sings, in a chorus that is almost defiantly fist-pumping. The latter half bears out with surprises that you keep turning over, with quick shots of breakbeat in close quarters with moony bass and synth work on the decadently languid 'Communal Luxury.'

Those familiar with Stidworthy and Holm’s various projects won’t be surprised by the crunching fingerwork or even the late-hour appearance of violin on 'Birds.' Beneath all, the Brooch EP brings us the duo’s best songs to date."
